Roger Federer’s Top 5 Greatest Shots

Roger Federer is one of the great shotmakers of our era. He has the ability to craft points and hit shots that make the terms “jaw-dropping” and “eye-slackening” seem without meaning. Trying to confine the greatest shots of Roger Federer’s career is like trying to empty the Hoover Dam with a thimble. There’s probably enough out there to make a top 100, but these are the shots that have made the short list. The following have primarily been selected for their uniqueness — the “I’ve never seen that before, and I may never see it again” factor. Many players on the tour can hit the tweeners, the blazing forehand winners, and the angled passing shots…but these are, I believe, quintessential Federer shots.

I’m leaving out such crazy shots as, among others, the 2005 French Open semi against Rafael Nadal, the incredible short-angled play against David Ferrer in the 2007 Shanghai Masters, the no-look flick pass against Alejandro Falla at Wimbledon 2004, the incredible around-the-post backhand against Guga Kuerten in 2002 (and the one against Ascione in 2007), practically any shot he hit against Andy Roddick at the 2007 Australian, and many others. Let me know if I’m missing any special shots…I will post them!

So without further ado…Roger Federer’s top 5 greatest shots.

5. 2008 US Open — Retreating, Leaping, Overhead…Lob? Passing Shot

You could watch a million other players get in this situation a million times and they would still never think, let alone try, to hit a slicing overhead LOB off an overhead while fading away from the baseline. An overhead smash off an overhead would likely be equally inconceivable…or is it?

4. 2005 Australian Open — Full-stretch “Around-the-Post” Forehand

Many of you will undoubtedly say that an around-the-post shot can be played by other players. But for me, it’s not that it was played in the first place…it was HOW it was played. This wasn’t a shovel shot, where TMF could just bunt the ball around the post likeĀ  most players do when they get this shot. TMF had to stretch full-on just to reach the ball…this shot was at full-stretch, and ALL wrist. Note the face of the racquet head at 0:26…closed the entire time. How could the ball even hit the strings??? That to me is crazy.

3. 2004 Pacific Life Open — “The Greatest Shot I’ve Ever Seen Hit”

The commentator says that this might be the greatest shot he’s ever seen hit…but when the player is Roger Federer, these shots come up on an unnervingly frequent basis.

(The ballkid must have been trained quite well…she barely even flinched!)

2. 2004 Dubai Open — “Impossible” no-look backhand flick lob

“That ball…was BEHIND him. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.” – Andre Agassi’s confidence

1. 2002 Basel Open — “Immortal” Flying Over-the-Shoulder No-Look Overhead

This particular shot needs no introduction. I can only imagine if Patrick McEnroe and Cliff Drysdale were commentating this shot…they would have to hire some professional cleaners to wipe the mess in the press box after their heads explode.

So there you have it…five shots of such stunning skill, creativity, and ORIGINALITY…that they can only be part of the Federer experience.

Are these the greatest shots of Roger Federer’s career? What are some of your favorites? Let us know what you think!

  1. I’d say the one against roddick in basel, no one else would even had attempted to get a racquet off of that roddick smash, just the speed at which it all happened was astounding.

  2. Amazing compilation :D Enjoyed.

  3. I’d say the one against Agassi in Dubai

  4. Agassi in dubai.

If u factor in the occasion though, I can’t get that backhand pass in the 4th set tiebreak, down championship point against nadal, in this year’s wimby. Sure, he’s hit loads of backhand passes like that in his careers, but given the circumstances… that shot made me yelp so loud my mom ran out of her room to see if I was alright.

  5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ec_BqAwHwls @ 2:15 is pretty sick. I’ve never seen anyone create such a ridiculous angle from the middle of the court…except of course TMF :)

that’s all I can think of from the top of my head.

shot #3, although sick as hell, has already been hit by Pete Sampras once before (exact same backhand from similar position), which slightly takes away its uniqueness :( Nonetheless, it’s still ridiculous

  6. (5) is a reduced version of (1): shots are similar; Djoker is a much less smasher than A-Rod; Fed didn’t have to jump as much in (5).

Around-the-post is more a testimony of footwork and speed rather than shot-making skill.

    (2) is simply amazing, but I have to say that luck plays some part in it. To clarify, I don’t think even TMF can repeat such a shot whenever he wish.

However, (1) is the type of shot that Fed can play again. (5) is one such replays. It is played against the heaviest smasher of all time, and on one of the fastest courts of all time, playing for his home crowd against one of the strongest contenders in his early career. And no, that is NOT a bad smash from Roddick as some say it is. It could have been deeper but it’s a decent smash from anyone. Fed just guessed where it would land and glided over like superman.

Personally I think Fed produced plenty of brilliant shots with another shot-making master, David Nalbandian. It would be justifiable that Fed’s top 5 shots includes one with Dave. My personal favorite is this one, one of Fed’s best squash shots:

By the way, great YouTube Channel. A gala for all hard-core Fed Fans. :-)

  7. I like these two shots alot but I would rank these between 5-10.

The first and third one at the following link.

    2004 Australian Open R16
    Federer v. Hewitt
    Amazing defence!

    2006 Australian Open R32
    Federer v. Mirnyi
Sick running flat backhand. Jaw dropping.

  8. BlackBlood Says:

I think the last one in Basel is the greatest one.He was so far behind the field and jumped so high.

  9. Well i watched live the point against Agassi and i think its a special one i have not seen a similar shot ever for example the the first one and the fifth are similar he also hit a similar one against Stepanek at usopen please can you upload it if you have it, also around post shots are normal for Federer but the one against Agassi its special,Agassi’s face says all about it.

  10. Yeah, Steven, you are right, this shot against Nalbandian should be in top 5 instead of one around the post. That is not too difficult

  11. Look at this
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZJtP7M589s&feature=related

practically the same as Roger did in Dubai against Agassi

  12. Yeah, Prorock you’re right! How could I forget the one against Soderling! A double take no less. Thanks for the reminder.

But still, (2) is just too good to be true. Roger himself seems to think so. :-) While (1) just roars “I’m the King.”

  13. I just thought of two more shots—in 2008!

Both made the mercedes benz play of the week.
    v. Kiefer Halle: http://www.atptennis.com/en/multimedia/default_video.asp?videoid=570
such a precise shot from an impossible get!
    vs. Karlovic Cincinatti: http://www.atptennis.com/en/multimedia/default_video.asp?videoid=704
suspended midair for a couple milliseconds in a backhand overhead attempt, he regains his footing and is able to flick it barely by the 6′10″-er with his back turned!

  14. hey, what about point he won in doubles with wawrinka against Nadal and Moya?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vu7SS0GQt_c

and famous shot with henman? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GusfleJLl4I

  15. why did your youtube channel get suspended? did someone complain? here’s hoping you come back soon. thank you for all your hard work in putting those videos up…

  16. what ever happened to the federermagic account on youtube??

  17. hmm about the doubles point, that shot isnt too hard to do when you have a very short ball with no pace, true he go there in time which requires brilliant footwork but he was coming at the same time. oh and since it was a slice as well its alot hard to control compared to a small tap.

I actually managed to produce a forehand version of that shot in a doubles match when the opponent made a net cord when i was standing on the service line waiting for a volley. Tapped it back CC for a winner after it clipped the tape again. Up to u if u wanna believe it or not or wtv.

BTW FEDERERMAGIC, HOW/WHY DID YOUTUBE BAN YOU? I NEVER MANAGED TO DWLD UR VIDEOS OFF UR CHANNEL AND NOW THEY’RE GONNEEE T_T
